Perfect Face by Skin Type: Combination / Oily skin (Foundations) (Sheer to Light/Medium coverage)

Check back every now and then, since this is sort of a ‘database’; I will keep on adding as I remember/find new foundations

What’s particular about combination or oily skin is that it can present dehydration (quite severe at times), flakiness, irritation, discoloration, enlarged pores and whathave you.

It can be tricky to deal with it because it can be unpredictable: Use the wrong product and the skin will get oilier, or at times; drier.

In this part I shall focus on the foundations; from lowest minimal coverage to the highest coverage.

There are many foundations that I have omitted because they deserve their own post; Those are the foundations that can work on ANY skin type given the proper primer and application.

Since this post is mainly about combination to oily skin (and very oily skin), I have selected what I found the best (out of my stash) to resist the wear due to oiliness and also less setting in flakiness.

This Combination / Oily series will be spread in 5 sections: Sheer to Light/Med coverage, Med to Full coverage, Full coverage, Primers +concealers and powders+setting sprays.

How does the rating work?

Oil controlling from 0 to 10: In comparison to wearing only moisturizer + sunscreen, how the skin produces oiliness as the day goes by.

How do I choose the foundation?

I recommend you go and try the foundations before buying them, because all skins are different and react a different way. And a foundation might react with your skin care.

But a good starting point would be:

0 to 4: Combination skin, no big oil concerns, isn’t bothered by oil production

4 to 6: Combination skin with slightly more oil production, or a ‘tamed’ oily skin

6 to 8: Oily skin (or combination living in very hot/humid environment)

8 to 10: In need of a top performance product either for photoshoot, very hot/humid environment, studio lights etc…

Light to medium coverage (Won’t cover any major acne or scarring, but will make it look less evident. Concealer will be necessary)

Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer spf 15

Benefits:

Finish: Glowy / Fresh / Moisturized
Coverage: Light to medium
Oil free: Yes
Sunscreen: Yes
Oil controlling: 6 out of 10
Comments: It stays in well, hydrates the skin, has a decent coverage. It smells and feels like studio sculpt.
Lightest shade available: Shell (NC15 in studio sculpt)

Bobbi Brown BB cream Spf 35

Benefits:

Finish: Matte-Fresh
Coverage: Light to medium
Oil free: Yes
Sunscreen: Yes
Oil controlling: 7 out of 10
Comments: It is a tad more ‘drying’ than the Hourglass Tinted moisturizer. It can settle in pores/flakiness. Controls oil much better.
Lightest shade available: Extra Light (NC/NW 15 in mineralized satinfinish)

Ellis Faas Skin Veil

Finish: Fresh
Coverage: Light to medium
Oil free: Yes (?)
Sunscreen: Yes
Oil controlling: 4-5 out of 10
Comments: Although it doesn’t mattify per se (it gets a tad more glowier after 10 minutes of applying it), it does stay in well and doesn’t seem to ‘melt’ that much.
Lightest shade available: S101 (NW/NC 13 mac studio sculpt)

Lancome Teint Idole fresh wear

Finish: Fresh-Matte
Coverage: Light to medium
Oil free: Yes
Sunscreen: No
Oil controlling: 5 out of 10
Comments: Not my personal favorite and somewhat of a disappointment because it emphasizes flakiness, I must include it here because it feels fresh, its very watery and does a somewhat decent job if you have oily skin. But by no means it controls the oil ‘that’ well considering it is meant for oily skin. Also, I include it because it has a very pale shade.
Lightest shade available: Ivoire (NW10)
Sheer to Light coverage (If you have nothing to hide or don’t mind your imperfections to show and all you want is to even skin tone and give a nice glow to the skin)

Chantecaille future skin gel foundation

Finish: Fresh-Glowy
Coverage: Sheer to Light
Oil free: Yes
Sunscreen:
Oil controlling: 6 out of 10
Comments: It keeps the skin looking ‘healthy’ and controls the oil pretty well (or at least it does not provoke it). If you like Mac f&b but it didn’t work for you, try this one. It is among my favorites.
Lightest shade available: Porcelain (NW 10)

Pupa Fondotinta Antitraccia spf 15

Aveda Mineral Tinted moisturizer spf 15

Finish: Fresh-Glowy
Coverage: Sheer
Oil free: Yes

Oil controlling: 4 out of 10
Comments: It didn’t cause more oiliness, it is a nice moisturized look with very slight skin tint. It is like a sheerer version of Mac f&B in white.
Lightest shade available: 00 Sheer (Mac f&b white)

Mac Face & Body Foundation

Finish: Fresh-Glowy
Coverage: Light (Buildable)
Oil free: No
Sunscreen:
Oil controlling: 3 out of 10

Dainty Doll Foundation

Finish: Fresh Matte
Coverage: Sheer
Oil free: Yes
Sunscreen: No
Oil controlling: 3 out of 10
Comments: It is a very silicone-ish foundation and feels very silicone-ish. It is very similar to Armani’s face fabric but a tad more oil controlling. It fills in the pores quite nicely.
Lightest shade available: Ivory ( NW08-10)
